Funkie House Celebrating 3 Milestones!

As you may know, 2024 marks the 35th anniversary of Funkie House. But let's take a moment to reflect on some remarkable journeys from our Funkie Family. As the title of this blogpost suggests, this month we're celebrating some incredible milestones from three team members that've been with us through every season, style, and trend. Each of them has played a unique role in shaping Funkie House.

Let's highlight the journeys of Ralph, Jan-Willem, and Rachèl, who together bring over 47 years of experience, dedication, and heart to our team. A big shoutout to these three for their commitment, growth, and sense for style. Here’s to many more years of memories and milestones!

Ralph - 20 years at Funkie House
–I started working at Funkie 20 years ago, working for Funkie Outlet located across the street in the building that later became Daily Rush. I spent over a decade as a Supervisor and then Assistant Manager. In that smaller space, I learned a lot, which I later got to develop further when I took on the role of all-around manager at Funkie House after we merged Daily Rush’s brand lineup and inventory into Funkie House.

One thing I’ve always focused on, is bringing the cozy, friendly atmosphere that Daily Rush had into Funkie House, and I’m proud to say that it’s still alive and well. And yes, after 20 years I still go to work with a big smile on my face. Thanks to the job I love and an amazing team I work with.

And last but not least, a big shoutout to Wilco for giving me these opportunities and supporting me through the highs and lows in life.

FUNKIE!!!

Jan-Willem - 17 years at Funkie House
–I’ve been with Funkie House for around 17 years. I joined in 2006, after spending a few years defending our country as a soldier. Starting as a Sales Advisor, it took about six months until I was promoted to Assistant Store Manager which kept me busy for 2.5 years before going back to art school. After that I continued working at Funkie House as a weekend manager. During and after my studies, I began working as a freelance photographer and even did some freelance work for Funkie House over the years.

Eventually, I moved on and worked elsewhere for about 3.5 years. But Wilco tracked me down and asked me to return, this time as the Store Manager. In this role, I've been overseeing the store’s daily operations, train our amazing team, and ensuring that our customers get a positive shopping experience.

After all these years, the work is still incredibly fun and challenging. Funkie House is always evolving and focusing on innovation. Personally, the customer interactions are my favorite part of the job. Over the last 35 years, Funkie House grew into an incredible community, and I’m lucky to know many of them in person—some have even become dear friends. Here’s to the next 17 years!

Rachel - 10 years at Funkie House
–10 years at Funkie House! I started as an assistant store manager, a role where I quickly got the chance to dive into visual merchandising. After three years, I had the opportunity to transition into buying, first as an assistant, and after a year, I was given full responsibility for the buying process.

Besides being a Buyer, I also serve as the Creative Director. This means I'm not only responsible for curating the collections, but also for all visual elements – from the store displays to the overall look of our campaigns.

It truly is my dream job, as it allows me to channel all my creativity. Each season brings a new challenge, and my goal is always to present the store in its best. On top of that, we’ve built an amazing team over the years, filled with like-minded, fun individuals who make my job even more enjoyable.

I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of the Funkie family for 10 years, and I look forward to many more! A huge shoutout to Wilco for the opportunity and the trust he placed in me.

Celebrating an anniversary calls for a surprise party. So that’s exactly what we did! We invited the whole Funkie family, including friends, partners, family, and of course, our current and former staff.
